Park Orienteering

What is it?

Park Orienteering is a relatively new form of orienteering conducted in parks and built-up areas. For the competitive, format is fast and furious with route choice often dominated by determining the quickest way around buildings, lakes and other obstacles. For the not so competitive, its a chance to wander through a range of parks while enjoying a navigational challenge. Recent Australian Championship carnivals have seen the introduction of an elite Sprint-O event followed by a Park-O on the same courses open to the general public.

When is it held?

Park-O was introduced to Queensland in October/November of 2004 through the Ugly Gully Park-O Series. There was a further series organised by the Queensland Cyclones in February/March 2005. Both Ugly Gully and the Cyclones are organising similar series over the summer of 2005/2006.

Queensland Cyclones Park-O Series Summer 2007

To continue the Park-O in Brisbane, Queensland Cyclones are running a series of weekend events starting in late January 2007. These events will incorporate the use of the SportIdent timing system on both courses. SportIdent cards will be available for use for those who don't have their own. Most events are on Saturday afternoon with start times are from 3.30 pm. Courses close at 5.30 pm.

Each event has two courses - a short course with easy navigation of a length of about 1-2 km, and a long course of harder navigation with a length of about 4-5 km. For security reasons, the events will use the Ugly Gully Street-O controls. These will be chained to a suitable object.

To order a PRE-MARKED COLOUR MAP, please visit the Park-O pre-entry page. Alternatively, you may use the contact details given below. On the day entry is possible but you may be required to copy your course onto your map from a master map or have a black and white map.
